On this date in 1540, Thomas Cromwell, erstwhile Earl of Essex, was beheaded on London’s Tower Hill. The man who ordered his execution, King Henry VIII, was not present—he was marrying his fifth wife, Catherine Howard. Cromwell had, only a year before, been one of the most influential men in Henry’s court. So how could it all gone so wrong so quickly?
I don't think that's a spoiler. I've only seen one episode. But Sean Bean characters have a tendency to die, so his casting as Cromwell now feels like a historical wink and nod for the nerds.
I started watching Shardlake on Hulu last night. Sean Bean plays Thomas Cromwell. I should have realized that was an omen. 😂
I didn’t realize I needed to add spoiler alerts.

Oliver is my favorite Cromwell.
Yeah it took a few generations but the Cromwell’s ended up getting their revenge on the king.
